Hi there! And welcome to my blog once again! Today I will be writing about some main concerns of guinea pig owners. But don’t worry if you don’t have a guinea pig! I will be including some guinea pig photos and facts! So, before we begin, here are some cute guinea pig photos!SWEETPEA! Wook at his ickle wickle face!

Anyway, now for some main concerns of guinea pig owners:

One guinea pig or two?

A few years ago, I would have said yes, definitely two! But after I got Sweetpea, all that changed! With humans he was the gentlest guinea pig around! But with other guinea pigs, he was the fiercest! So I would say it’s up to you and your guinea pig. If you don’t have much time to spend with your piggie, you could get him/her a guinea pig friend! Just make sure they are of the same gender, though, unless you want lots of little guinea pigs running around! Also, how does your guinea pig get along with others? Of course, it’s natural if they fight a bit, but if they draw blood, that’s a sign that it’s time to intervene!

Inside or outside?

Again, this depends on you. Of course, it’s probably safer to keep your guinea pig inside, especially if you have very old or very young guinea pigs, but as long as the cage is sturdy, you don’t have to worry about it! I personally prefer to keep Sweetpea outside, as it makes less mess. But if you have very cold temperatures in the winter, it’s probably best to move the cage inside. Right now, the baby guinea pigs are living in our garage, until their old enough to live outside!

What do I feed my guinea pig?

Well, I know that’s not really a main concern of guinea pig owners, but it’s handy to know what foods guinea pigs can eat, and , more importantly, what they can’t eat! So here is a list of the most important foods for a guinea pigs diet:

Grain and grass! These two foods are essential for your guinea pig! Grain and grass have lots of healthy vitamins ( which I don’t know how the name of!) and they are very good for your guinea pig and all that sorta stuff……

Vegetables! These are also very important because vegetables contain the very important vitaminC ( I have said ” very important ” way to many times!) vitaminC is essential to guinea pigs, and as many vegetables include vitaminC, it is best to feed lots of them!

Fruit! Most guinea pigs LOVE fruit, and for a reason! It is FULL of sugar! ( a bit like lollies to children!) it is best to feed fruit sparingly, once or twice a week,or for a special treat!

Store bought treats! These are, like the name suggests, TREATS! Do I need to say more?!

Now that we have gone through the lists of things guinea pigs can eat, here is a ( rather large!) list of things guinea pigs can’t eat!

Potatoes, green beans and iceberg lettuce

These may be vegetables, but please do not feed them to your darling piggie! We had a gorgeous baby guinea pig choke to death on a green bean once, and I would hate for it to happen to you!

Meat and fish

Guinea pigs seem to be vegetarians, right!? They only seem to be able to eat fruit and veg! Please don’t feed your ( vegetarian! ) guinea pig these products!

Chocolate & coffee

why is it that the foods we like best are the most dangerous to guinea pigs?! ( not that I can have coffee yet, of course!) You probably know these are dangerous to guinea pigs, but I’m not going to take any chances!

Onion and raisins

Well, just about any dried fruit isn’t good for guinea pigs! WAY to much sugar! And as for onions, well, would you really feed onions to your guinea pig!?

Dairy and egg products

*Sigh* do you you really need to know why you can’t feed these to your guinea pig!? Please just take my word for it that you shouldn’t feed these to your darling furball!

Okay! Now that we have gone through a ( rather long!) list of things you should and shouldn’t feed your guinea pig, here is a less stressful subject: guinea pig photos! Please enjoy!

here is a recipe that is as scrumptious for guinea pigs as it is to humans!

Fruit crumble

Ingredients: 1 cup oats, 1/2 cup apple, grated, 1/2 cup pear, diced finely 1/2 cup berries, chopped up/smashed, mint for serving. ( optional)

Directions: mix everything up, sprinkle with mint, and enjoy! But beware! You may like this fruit crumble so much, your guinea pig will miss out! ( it is best to serve this to your guinea pig on special occasions, as it has a fair bit of sugar!)

A few months ago, we had a surprise! A guinea pig shaped surprise! ( well, actually, two guinea pig shaped surprises! Does that sound weird? ) Anyway, it wasn’t really a surprise, we’d been expecting it for a while…. Mimi had babies!

You should know who Mimi is if you have read my other posts. If you haven’t, well, you will just have to go read them! My sister wanted to breed guinea pigs, so she put Mimi and Midnight together. ( if you don’t know who Midnight is, well, you better go read my other posts!) anyway, we waited for what felt like AGES but was actually a few weeks, she had babies!

It was very unexpected! I mean, we literally just got up and saw tiny little bundles of fluff running around! The amazing thing about baby guinea pigs is that they are born fully furred, with their eyes open! They can run almost as soon as they’re born!

One of the babies was mostly ginger, with a few patches of black. She was a female, so we named her Toffee. The other one was a boy, all white with pink eyes, but know that he’s growing older, his nose and paws are turning brown/black. After much debating on what to call him, ( marshmallow, Milky Way, milk..) we decide to call him Blizzard, after going through some crazier names! ( we were pretty much desperate, thinking up names like teeth, and paper…!

Pretty much anything white! ) Anyway, his name is Blizzard, and we couldn’t imagine him having any other name now! The babies have now grown so much! It’s hard to imagine they were ever babies! Sadly, we had to sell Toffee, but she went to a friend, so she will be in good hands! Anyway, now prepare yourselves for some super cute pictures!

Anyway, after that, things went quiet for a bit, until another litter of guinea pigs was born! ( dramatic music!) these little ones mum was Maya. Those of you who have read my earlier posts will know her as the sister of Mimi! Her litter was the same as Mimis! One girl and one boy! These little darlings look quite different from each other! The boy has the same agouti pattern on his coat as Maya, so at first we thought he was a girl! Closer inspection revealed, that, he was, in fact, a boy! My sister named him smudge, and he is soo adorable! The little girl actually looks very similar to Toffee, except she has cream and black, instead of ginger and black. Here are some adorable photos, ( I need to stop saying adorable! But they are! ) here is the darling little girl! ( we named her Star, by the way!) Here is Smudge! ( he was soo hard to take photos of! He kept moving! But in the end I managed to get two!)

Recently a mum from my homeschool group kindly invited us over to her house to find out how to raise a week old baby guinea pig after its mother tragically died. Here’s what I found out:

• Kittens milk is usually the best for feeding, unless you have or know someone who does have a sow with babies. She will usually accept another baby.
• If you don’t have kittens milk, goats milk can substitute for a while. You will have to feed the baby every two hours around the clock! ( yes, even at night!) newborns will have to be fed every hour and a half!
• As you can imagine, it does get very tiring having to get up every two hours to feed a guinea pig, so it is advisable to find a sow with babies as soon as possible! It is also essential to find a sow with babies, as the baby will not learn to eat solid food unless a sow is there to teach it.
• It is very important to know exactly how to feed it. With a small syringe gently push it into the babies mouth, releasing the milk VERY slowly. If you push it in too fast, the milk can go down the baby’s lungs, and it can die. It’s gruesome, but true! Now that we’ve covered the basics, here are some adorable photos of the gorgeous baby guinea pig that was so sadly left motherless: l

If you read my last writing, you will have learnt all about my guinea pig, Sweetpea. Today though, I will be writing about my sisters guinea pigs. Yes, plural! My sister has 7 guinea pigs in total, and she loves them all! Her first guinea pig is Midnight, a gorgeous black and orange Abyssinian. He is very shy, but is very easy-going with other guinea pigs. (Unlike Sweetpea, who viciously attacks any guinea pig who dares to enter his territory!) who loves to nibble on a carrot! He is just like a gorgeous fluffy teddy bear! Her next guinea pig is George, a sleepy but loveable guinea pig who loves to eat! George is a cream guinea pig with pink eyes. While that might at first seem strange, a guinea pig with pink eyes!? If you met George, you would have second thoughts! he is an absolute darling who loves to chill out on the couch with you!And next, the sisters, Mimi and Maya! Though they arrived as babies, they have grown up to have babies of their own! These darling little girls stole our hearts front the day they arrived! They are sisters, though with very different personalities, likes, and dislikes! Mimi is the smaller of the two. She is very timid, and always sticks close to her big sister! She is also very curious, and loves running around, discovering the latest guinea pig gossip! Maya is the big, bossy sister! She always gets the biggest piece of cabbage, the coziest sleeping spot! Though she is bossy, she is kind to Mimi, and always stays close by her! While Mimi loves running around, Maya loves nothing more then curling up in the sun for a nap! The one thing that is the same about them is the amount they are loved by all of us!

As you will probably have seen, I have devoted my blog to my guinea pig, Sweetpea. He is absolutely gorgeous! He has cream and white fur, and big dark eyes. He loves to snuggle on my lap, or nibble on a carrot. I have always loved guinea pigs, ever since I got one on my seventh birthday. Here is a list of reasons why I think guinea pigs make perfect pets:

1. They are very cuddly, and will sit for ages, squeaking happily away on your lap!
2. They are very easy to keep, and don’t take up much space or energy!
3. They are very patient, and will very rarely bite.
4. They will eat all your vegetable scraps! (Just be sure not to feed them avocado, beans, potato, dairy, egg, nut or fish products.)
5. They don’t have any tails to pull, and, like I mentioned earlier, are very patient, so they are perfect for young children. (But make sure to supervise at all times!)  

So there is my list of things why I love guinea pigs. Phew! Anyway, you may be surprised to find that guinea pigs actually do exist in the wild! they don’t really have any defence tactics. Their only hope of surviving would be to run away from anything and everything! And its not only animals they would have to watch out for! In Peru, many people there would consider guinea pigs a tasty delicacy! You wouldn’t like to be a guinea pig in Peru! Anyway, that was my little fact file on guinea pigs!
